Chest for Valuables

This is a single-tiered furniture that was generally placed in the main room and the reception room. It is a safe used to store valuables or documents, and was also used as a medicine chest. It is made of wood with beautiful grains such as zelkova wood, and is often fitted with a number of metal ornaments that add aesthetic elegance. The safe shown here has three small drawers, two mid-sized drawers, and one big drawer. It is made of zelkova wood plate with clear grains, and was produced using half-blind dovetail joint. The surface is lacquered and the structure is reinforced by brass joint bars. Its legs are mostly the same as those used for wardrobes, which are slightly large compared to the body, and decorated with bat-shaped motifs. Two wooden frames are attached to the top and bottom of each door to prevent warp damage, and three swallow feather-shaped hinges are fitted on both sides of the door. A circular metal ornament with rings are attached to the front to hang a lock on it. The lock would be hung on the two eyebolts on the circular ornament as well as on the single eyebolt fixed on the inside vertical bar, thereby securely fixing the door.
