1688

Tallinn City Museum

Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

The baroque oak chest with decorative forges and paintings is from Tallinn town hall and it stored privileges bestowed upon the town by different rulers. The front and the sides of the chest are covered in idealised paintings of Tallinn; the back however sports a scene from a war camp. The inner side of the lid has the names and coats of arms of the two donors of the chest, the year of the donation 1688 and a text in Lower-German, which calls upon fair town governance. The chest was in use until 1877.
The cityscape on the chest also serves as the logo of Tallinn City Museum.
