The kutxa (chest), made of oak or chestnut wood, is one of the most representative objects of Basque furniture. Kutxas were usually rectangular and supported on four small legs, with varying degrees of decoration on the front. They were top-opening. The size varied depending on the function of the chest and the affluence of the owners.

Some of the ornamental motifs are similar to those found in other European regions. They vary greatly, encompassing the entire panoply from solar symbols to figures of animals, plants, rosettes, stars, crosses and even human outlines. Scholars have speculated that some of the patterns may have had a magical significance, since many of the motifs are the same as those found on steles and argizaiolas. The decoration appears to be influenced by the tastes of each particular period, and the result is a blend of folk art with Renaissance, Baroque and other styles.
