Cheyne Horan, a talented but somewhat eccentric pro surfer turned up at Bells Beach in 1984 for the Rip Curl Pro with an unusually shaped surfboard. While all his rivals were on sleeker three-finned Thrusters, Cheyne had worked with Terry Fitzgerald to come up with this shorter egg-shaped design, with a unique single-fin inspired by the revolutionary "winged" keel of the 1983 America's Cup winning yacht Australia II. Cheyne won the contest, beating that year's eventual world champion Tom Carroll in the final. Later that year he sold the board in France to pay for an airfare home, and has not seen it since. The museum created this replica with Terry Fitzgerald who shaped the original Bells winning board.
