In the process of husking the grains, they are first gently pounded in a mortar and pestle which helps in removing the chaff. This is then winnowed on a chhaaj to separate the chaff from the grain. This chhaaj, bought from a local craftsperson, was used once a month for this process. A thread was tied between the two ends to hold the curved position of the chhaaj intact.
