The making of a Purulia mask is done in 5 stages. It starts with casting a stone mould, which serves as the base for further processes. This is followed by shaping the mould by adding layers of paper, fabric and clay, after which the mask is painted. Once the painting is complete and dry, the final stage of decorating the mask is done using locally available materials . As part of the drying process, unfinished Chhau masks are often displayed outside the workshop at various stages.
