City attorney Richard Elrod tackled a Weatherman on October 11, 1969. Elrod hit his head, broke his neck, and suffered partial paralysis. Seizing political opportunity, Mayor Daley cast Elrod as a martyr for law-and-order and slated him for Sheriff, an office he held from 1970 to 1986.
