Interior view, south wing, grand staircase (imitation of the Escalier des Ambassadeurs at Versailles).
This image is a photochrome. Similar to a lithograph, the individual color layers are printed separately and thus receive their radiant colorfulness. A black-and-white photograph by the Bavarian court photographer Joseph Albert served as a model for the printing process. Albert photographed the interiors of Herrenchiemsee Palace in 1886, the year King Ludwig II died; the prints were published in 1887. Photochroms from Photochrom Zürich, abbreviated P. Z., are often identified by a serial number followed by the letters P. Z. and a caption in gold letters.
