United Kingdom

This dress was worn by a child in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The pattern of the cotton fabric shows the events of the coronation, including the Queen on a throne, Buckingham Palace, the coach procession, royal guards, and crowds of cheering spectators. Patriotic details include the three buttons on the bodice attached with red, white and blue thread. The coronation inspired a large amount of memorabilia like this, including commemorative porcelain, medallions and postage stamps.

The small puffed sleeves, Peter Pan collar with round neckline, gathered skirt, pockets and ribbon tie are all characteristic of fashionable wear for children at the time. The dress was treasured by the family, and after being used to dress a large doll was carefully preserved before being given to the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection.
