Born in Sussex in 1921, Joan Eardley studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1940-1943 and remained in Scotland up until her untimely death from cancer at the age of 42.
In Children and Chalked Wall No.2, Eardley depicts two Glasgow street urchins, a common subject in her work, loitering in front of a wall plastered with graffiti.
In this work, the figures of the children are shifted to the lower land hand section of the composition so that Eardley can lavish attention on the graffiti-covered brownstone wall, punctuated by bursts of colour from the collaged material stuck directly to the canvas.
