San Cecilio is the patron saint of Granada and is celebrated on 1 February. His pilgrimage has been celebrated since 1599, after a plague that devastated Granada and which, according to tradition, was overcome by the invocation of the saint. A series of liturgical acts are celebrated to commemorate the feast day of San Cecilio, with the help of the local authorities, and on the Sunday closest to the feast day the famous pilgrimage of San Cecilio to the Abbey of Sacromonte takes place. As with any pilgrimage, there is a series of popular festivities. The distribution of salaíllas or jayuyas, beans, cod, Sacromonte tortilla and wine is traditional, as are local and regional dances and music - with flamenco as the main protagonist - organised for the occasion.
