A Chinese alligator.

Scientific name: Alligator sinensis

Chinese dragon
Could this little alligator have inspired stories of the great Chinese dragon? Ancient texts describe Chinese dragons digging burrows, breathing out rain clouds and sleeping in pools during winter. Similarly, the Chinese alligator hibernates underground, and in spring steam rises from males’ nostrilsas they bellow to attract a mate.
