The Chinese zodiac is the classification system of assigning an animal to each year in a repeating twelve-year circle. In order, the twelve animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. People born on a certain animal year are believed to have certain attributes related to that animal, and this animal will become his or her representative animal sign. The Chinese in the past attached such great importance to their representative zodiac animals that they would often use two people’s zodiac animals to predict whether the two would get along in a romantic relationship, or pray for blessing with the identity of one’s zodiac animal, etc. But now the zodiac animals have evolved into a cultural symbol, especially for cultural activities during the traditional Chinese Spring Festivals.
