Christopher Toms, along with four other surfing friends was killed in a car accident on October 10, 1966 at the Middleton level crossing. A memorial was erected on the Esplanade at Seaford in 1990. The trophy is related to surfing during its early development in South Australia. It commemorates the tragic loss of five surfers on the return trip from Middleton, one of South Australia's most popular surf beaches. With the accident, South Australia lost some of its most promising young surfers.
