Christ and the Canaanite woman

Annibale Carracci1594/1595

Pinacoteca Stuard

Pinacoteca Stuard
Parma, Italy

The painting depicts an evangelical episode narrated by Matthew and Mark. During his preaching, Jesus is begged by a Canaanite woman (from the region of Canaan, so a pagan woman) to heal her sick (or possessed) daughter. Jesus, because of the woman's non-Jewish faith, is apparently contemptuous, but after seeing her conversion, he fulfills the request.
