Sketch for a relief made in 1841. The motif is one in a suite of drawings representing scenes from the life of Christ, all done in pencil, on which Thorvaldsen worked during the last years of his life. He had turned his attention to the same range of motifs in 1817 as the result of a commission from the young Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig.
