In the center of the painting, Christ carries the cross in his right hand and shows the wound on the left; he wears a red tunic and is crowned with thorns. He turns to the right where St. Bernardine of Feltre is, with a Franciscan habit and his hands folded in prayer. On the left St. Jerome, just covered by a red cloak, is touching the cross with his right hand. Typical of Prospero Fontana is the asymmetrical perspective view of the cross that establishes the depth of the painting and the portrait skills of the Bolognese painter: the accentuated characterization of the saint with joined hands and of the other faces gives the work a triple portrait value.
