Christ is here depicted as if turning to his mother or to one of the other holy women who witnessed the procession to Calvary where he was crucified. The faces of two soldiers are also included in the composition; one of them is only just discernible in the darkness top right.

Melone was a pupil of Gerolamo Romanino.
