  • Description: Together with three other panels in the same collection, this painting is part of a Christological complex, a diptych or triptych, which came from a Franciscan convent, as indicated by the presence of the nun in the scene of the Flagellation. Their affinity with the works of Ghissi prompted scholars to attribute them to this master and to date them to just after 1350. Further consonance with Ghissi’s work can also be seen in the organization of the narrative scenes, which recalls the altarpiece with the Life of St. John (from San Nicolò in Fabriano and found in pieces in various museums today), dating back, however, to a later moment in the activity of the painter from Le Marche.
