In this garden of olive trees, Jesus, knowing that his death is near, is isolated from the Apostles in the foreground. This scene from the New Testament preceded Christ’s arrest, organized by Judas, who arrives accompanied by soldiers.

In accordance with medieval tradition, the plants are chosen mainly for their symbolic meaning rather than being depicted realistically. At the foot of the rock, white bluebells presage the Passion. In the background of the garden, enclosed by a plaited fence called a “plessis,” a flowering tree symbolizes spring and the Easter festival.

Beyond the hills, plant motifs decorate a gold-leaf sky which, in the Middle Ages, symbolized the presence of God.
