Although slightly larger than a miniature, Cicognara’s image resembles that genre of painting. The artist precisely renders tiny details and textures. His depiction of Christ is unusual but not unprecedented in northern Italian painting of the period. The crown of thorns and the rope imply physical suffering, but Christ’s seated posture conveys a sense of calm resolve.
