During the 1940s and 1960s, the artist painted more than 45 scenes of the life of Christ mainly in watercolour and China ink. Like in her Madonnas, these scenes are executed in two-dimensional technique and make use of a bright earthy pallete as means to express deeper feelings and emotions. Numerous iconographic cross references between East and West are also visible, particularly in with regard to physical features and attire.
In this particular work, Ângela depict Jesus preaching under a tree, seated with the holy lamb at his feet and a golden vessel. Christ’s Indian features are noticeable, with almond eye, long black hair and beard. His saffron robes, contrasting shawl and barefoot accentuate his Indianness. Like in many other religious paintings, Ângela portrays the central character of her painting with his hands performing a mudra, in this particular case Jesus right hand is in a teaching position.
To emphasise the universality of his teachings, Ângela surrounded Christ with people from all communities, ages, and backgrounds. Men, women, and children, affluent and common came together to hear the son of God, to whom they are all equal.
