Christ Presented to the People

1655

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Rotterdam, Netherlands

This is one of Rembrandt’s most experimental prints. The print is executed entirely using the drypoint technique in which the copper plate was scratched directly with a metal stylus. In this case the plate was not printed on paper but on vellum. At the centre of the composition we see the Roman governor Pontius Pilate showing Christ to the people, who call out for his crucifixion (Matthew 27:11-26).
