Christ Resurrected

Marco Basaitic. 1510

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana
Milano, Italy

The painting shows the resurrected Christ in the foreground. He is sitting on a rocky spur with his sides covered by the shroud in which he had been wrapped, and with his right hand he points to the wound in his ribs. In his left hand he holds the banner of Easter victory (the white flag with a red cross). The rock he is seated on bears, to the left, a Latin inscription which takes from a phrase from the apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, making the words those of our Lord after the resurrection. It acts as a caption for this painting: “Death shall have no dominion over me”.
