United Kingdom

A marine chronometer based on the designs of the great watchmaker Thomas Mudge. The original instrument was too difficult to manufacture, so Robert Pennington and Richard Pendleton fitted it with a simpler mechanism. Chronometers were used to determine the position of a ship at sea by observing celestial bodies in the sky and comparing it with Greenwich Mean Time, which was represented on the instrument.
