Chungjin used to be a steel city. Chungjin Steel Mill and Kimchaek Steel Mill were the two major factories in the region. The city was known as the industrial powerhouse of the nation even though it failed to draw much attention from the political arena. In the 1990s, the city suffered greatly from the economic recession, but it managed to overcome its difficulties and became the largest business city in North Korea. In 2019, an amazing urban project was initiated at the site where Chungjin Steel Mill factory was once located. Now, business activities and architecture are the two lifelines that sustain the region. We look forward to seeing dynamic openness and pioneership in Chungjin.
