The church was built by architect Bernard Meretyn in the Baroque style in 1751-1758 on the initiative of Lviv canon and archdeacon Szczepan Michalski. In 1946, the Polish community was forcibly evicted from Godovytsia and the church was closed. In 1974, the church suffered a fire that destroyed the roof, painted walls, and vaults. Most of Johann Pinsel's sculptures were moved to the Lviv Art Gallery in 1965.
