José dos Reis Carvalho (ca. 1798/1800 - Rio de Janeiro, ca. 1892?) Was a Brazilian painter, draftsman and teacher. In 1824, he joined the first class of the painting course at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (AIBA), when he was a student of Jean-Baptiste Debret. He was a member of the Scientific Exploration Commission, responsible for documenting the ethnographic, zoological and botanical aspects of the Brazilian hinterland, between 1859 and 1861. There's an inscription: "Church of Our Lady Conceição do Outeiro from the beach in the Capital of Ceará. Here Father Augustine preached his missions in 1859"
