Church Of Santa Maria Maggiore

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, near Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, was built after the terrible earthquake of 1693 that struck all of eastern Sicily. Its interior, designed by Rosario Gagliardi, represents one of the most significant testimonies of the late Baroque and Rococo artistic culture of south-eastern Sicily.
