The golden age of Salvador’s architecture was between the 17th and 18th centuries, characterized by the transition from Renaissance to Baroque style. Fueled by the wealth of sugar, tobacco, slave trade and the production of cacao, the city saw the rise of palaces and manors, and the religious Orders constructed their most luxurious churches and convents, such as the Jesuit church, now the Cathedral of Salvador, and São Francisco, Carmel, Santa Tereza and São Bento.
