Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach
In this sparsely characterized view, Huber guides the eye along the direct path to a church located only slightly off-center and framed by trees. The choir of the church and the viewer’s focal point coincide. Skillful arrangement of the motifs produces an effect of depth that opens up into the immense expanse of the background and is emphasized by the low horizon line.

- Artist Biography: Huber is documented in Passau in 1515, where he became court painter to the bishop. In 1541 he was mentioned in a document as the municipal architect of Passau. With his pronounced interest in landscape and its atmospheric and coloristic effects, Huber is regarded as the main exponent of the so-called Danube school after Albrecht Altdorfer.
