  • Bio: Josephee Kakee was an accomplished Inuit artist who worked in a number of media, including drawing, stone cut printing, sculpture and tapestry weaving. He was born in Pangnirtung, Northwest Territories (in present day Nunavut), where he lived and worked throughout his career. His work depicts everyday scenes from people hunting to children playing. He is said to have loved to portray the joys of children in his tapestries, depicting traditional outdoor games and play. Kakee collaborated with other artists, including his wife, artist Martha Kakee. In 1985 Martha Kakee related, “We started drawing together, but from the very first, Josephee had his own style. He wanted to show the clothes people wore, and the way they used to hunt. In…many of his drawings, two people are seen on the land. Some of those are we two, Josephee and Martha. He also loved to draw children, and remembered all their games of old.” In 1992 Towie Etungat created a weaving based on Kakee’s original drawing titled Circle Game Aisaqtut. Towie Etungat’s weaving is the piece the Art Bank holds in its collection today.
