Founded in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hubley Manufacturing Company specialized in cast-iron toys. The company's earliest products included trains and trolleys powered with steam, spring mechanisms, or electricity. In the early 20th century, Hubley expanded its range of products to include miniature stoves, still banks, cap pistols, and dollhouse kitchen appliances, but the company continued to focus on transportation toys. In 1922 Hubley introduced a collection of horse-drawn circus wagons known as the Royal Circus. The series, which grew to include over 20 toys, captured the allure of the parades that occurred when the circus arrived in town, a fantastic spectacle that featured exotic animals in embellished wagons and served as an advertisement for the big show.
