Citizens Register for the Draft at the 8th Armory WWI

Black leaders were divided on whether African Americans should fight “to make the world safe for democracy” when they were denied those freedoms at home. However, more than 290,000 African Americans registered for the draft in the summer of 1917, determined to prove their patriotism and right to full equality and freedom.
