The German-born photographer John Gay emigrated to England in 1935. A versatile photographer, he was skilled at capturing the behaviour and actions of ordinary people at work and at leisure. Much of his work pictures people unaware that they are being photographed. In this image he has taken up a position within a cake shop to record a girl and lady as they peer with delight through the shop window at the tempting delights inside.
