Charles Henry Miller is best known for his picturesque paintings and etchings of Long Island scenes. In 1867 he studied art at the Munich Royal Academy in Germany. Miller's artistic style was influenced by the characteristically dark palette and limited range of colors adopted by the Munich School. By 1873 he returned to New York and was exhibiting his landscape paintings regularly at the National Academy of Design. His scenes of Long Island were so well received that the author and critic Bayard Taylor referred to him as "the artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island"
