Clapper Bridge, Danby, North Yorkshire

Stone clapper bridges are of a simple construction, with slabs laid across rocks or piles of stones. This example, which carries a road over Danby Beck, has piers featuring herring-bone-tooled sandstone, and is probably medieval in origin. It was rebuilt in circa 1807 when a nearby mill was rebuilt. It is a rare example of its type and is listed Grade II.
