Clarrie Grimmett, 'The Fox' in action. New Zealand born Grimmett made a late debut aged thirty-three and caused a sensation by taking 11/82 against England in Sydney in 1924-25. For the next ten years he dominated the Australian bowling attack, latterly sharing the load with the great Bill O'Reilly. Grimmett invented the flipper, but in this photograph is tossing the ball well above the batsman's line of sight.
