Clay Figurine of a Woman

This clay figurine in the shape of a woman was found in a stone-chamber tomb at Hwangseongdong, Gyeongju in 1987. The interior of the stone-chamber tomb was irreparably disturbed, making it impossible to restore the exact burial form, but many clay figurines of people and animals were found. This clay figurine has a distinct part in the middle of its hair, which is pulled back to cover both ears and tied up in the back, with a twist to the left. Narrow eyes resembling a crescent moon and a pronounced nose stand out from the face. There is a bottle dangling from the right hand, while the sleeved left hand is raised to cover a smile. The sleeve and the skirt are very spacious, providing ample room, though the tips of the woman’s shoes can be seen peeking out from beneath her floor-length dress. The back of the figurine only has details of the belt, with scant attention given to the materials, but the figurine still gives a clear representation of the clothing of that time.
