  • About the Artist: Gao Yan lived during the last years of the Ming Dynasty, in the 17th Century. He was very much influenced by Shen Zhou and Wen Zhenming of the Wu (or Suzhou) School of Painting. The lush, verdant landscape here is typical of the Wu School. After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, Gao refused to serve the Manchu Court and made a living by selling his paintings and calligraphy. Today, his works are highly acclaimed for their artistic merit. This painting is testament to the great progress made in the fields of art and culture in 17th Century Guangdong Province.
