Clotilde in a grey dress

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida1900

Sorolla Museum
Madrid, Spain

This is one of the most attractive portraits of the artist’s wife. Her natural pose and simple dress help to emphasize the pleasanter, more familiar side of his model, who looks out at the viewer with a complacent smile.

The composition seems to have been planned as a contemporary photographic studio portrait: this painting of Clotilde is very similar to a studio photograph taken by her father Antonio García around the same time, suggesting that the painter may have been inspired by the photograph taken by his father-in-law.
