Inspired by places and people, Medalla considers himself a ‘citizen of the world’. His work is informed by complex combinations of memories and evolving relationships, and often reflects rhythms and systems found in the natural world. Working across various media, his practice incorporates painting, participatory work, performance and kinetic sculpture, including the pioneering ‘auto-creative’ sculptures that he first made in the 1960s. These works are put in a constantstate of movement and flux by mechanisms devised by Medalla, giving, in thewords of the artist, ‘tangible form to invisible forces’. Medalla made new auto-creative sculptures for his show at The Hepworth Wakefield, as well as anew iteration of his ongoing participatory piece ‘A Stitch in Time’.
