York, United Kingdom

From Oxford Publishing Company or Railprint Collection. Locomotive coal drops, Shildon.

Coal drops were a way to refuel locomotives using gravity. An engine would be positioned underneath the drops and the coal would be poured in from the top. This method saved significant time and labour, as without them coal would have to be shovelled by hand.

Built in 1847, these coal drops were the first in the world to be built. The coal drops are now a Grade II* listed structure and can be seen at Locomotion in County Durham.
