A miner's morning used to start at 5am with the sound of mine sirens. When he woke up, he wore sooty clothes, picked up a kerosene lamp and slung a tin box of food over his shoulder. At work, he blasted and mined coal from dawn to dusk 6 days a week. USA, late 19th century.
