Attushi coats is a typical Ainu garment mainly made of bast fiber from a type of elm tree called “ohyo”. This coat was formerly owned by an old family from the port town of Mikuni in Fukui prefecture. The family’s business related to the Kitamae cargo ships that were in service between Hokkaido and cities in the Seto Inland Sea via Japan Sea. This coat is an important resource in understanding the history of exchanges between the Ainu people and the Mainland Japanese.
