In the works dedicated to this theme, the artist's attention is usually centered on the two protagonists of the fight, while the animals in the background are always defined in more summary terms. In this painting the same executive accuracy deployed in the meticulous description of the colorful feathers of the two roosters is instead reserved - not without a certain taste for anecdote to the representation of the black and white hen on the right which, lively surrounded by chicks, allows us to consider the clash taking place as part of the normal daily life of the courtyard.
