Cocos nucifera (coconut palm) is perhaps the widest-grown palm in the world. It is not known for sure where the plant originated, because the fruits are buoyant and easily float from one island to another. Coconuts have many uses, as food and the source of oil, and the liquid inside has even been used as an intravenous hydration fluid in emergencies.
