The "Code Civil," also called "Code Napoléon," was the French code of civil law. It entered into force on March 21, 1804. It is one of the most important achievements of Napoleonic rule. The statute book laid down liberal basic principles of the revolution. After the collapse of Napoleonic rule, the Code remained valid in those German territories on the left bank of the Rhine.
