Coiffure of Madame de Korff

1791

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

This anonymous cartoonist has satirised the attempted escape of the royal couple through Montmédy when the Queen travelled under the name Madame de Korff (de Caoffre) with the King as her valet de chambre. Louis acts as the Queen’s coiffeur; her hair was often the subject of ridicule because it was linked to the extravagant sums she spent on fashion.
