İstanbul, Türkiye

On the obverse of the coin are a lion and
bull protome facing one another and on
the reverse are two quadratum incusum
(square depressions) produced during
minting. The coin is a stater and must
have been minted in Sardis during the
early period of the Lydian Kingdom. It
is thought that the roaring lion motif on
Lydian coins symbolizes the supremacy
of the Lydian Kingdom and that the bull
represents the Kingdom of Phrygia,
which was conquered by Lydia (see Tekin
1997a, p. 75).
